Annual Memorial Day Picnic
The Annual Memorial Day Picnic for the Meeker County Historical Society will be held on Monday from 11-to-1:30 at the Litchfield Opera House. The event is an important fundraiser each year for the Meeker County Museum.
Museum Executive Director Danelle Erickson says the menu will include pulled pork sandwiches with side dishes, pie and ice cream and it’s $15 for adults and $5 for children 5-to-12. She says this is their big fundraiser of the year.
Erickson says Memorial Day began right after the Civil War as members of the Grand Army of the Republic decorated the graves of Civil War veterans, and over the years, the holiday has evolved as a way to honor all veterans. She says there are over 200 Civil War veterans buried in cemeteries around Meeker County.
Erickson says the G.A.R. Hall and Meeker County Museum has been hosting lots of school children for tours over the past couple of weeks from Litchfield, Dassel-Cokato, AGCG and Kimball. She says the museum will have extended hours this summer on Thursday evenings until 6 p.m. as there are lots of activities in Litchfield on Thursdays.
Erickson says your meal ticket on Monday at the Litchfield Opera House will include admission to the museum at 308 North Marshall Avenue so you can go down the street after lunch and see what’s new at the Meeker County Museum. She says normally the museum is open Tuesday through Friday from 10-to-4 and Saturdays from noon-to-4 and you can find more details at meekercomuseum.org or on their Facebook page. Donations to the museum are welcome at any time and may be mailed to 308 North Marshall Avenue in Litchfield.
