Human Remains Uncovered Near Lake Lillian

The Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after what appear to be human remains were uncovered during excavation work near Lake Lillian. According to the sheriff’s office, an excavation employee contacted authorities at about 11:30 Wednesday morning after discovering several bones in the 9000 block of 123rd Avenue Southeast.
Deputies and detectives responded and determined the bones appeared to be human, although their origin was unknown at the time. With assistance from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, investigators excavated the immediate area and located additional remains believed to be from a single individual.
The Minnesota Indian Affairs Council was notified and later responded to the site. Preliminary findings indicate the remains may be archaeological in nature and of Indigenous origin. The remains have been transported to the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office for further examination and analysis.
The investigation remains open. Assisting the Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office are the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office, and the Minnesota Indian Affairs Council.
