The G.A.R. Hall and Meeker County Museum in Litchfield will be the site for another Civil War Roundtable meeting next week. The program on March 12th will begin at 1:30 p.m.
Museum Executive Director Danelle Erickson says the topic this time will be “The Seeds of the Civil War.” She says Joyce & Jim Hinderks will be talking about some of the events that led up to the Civil War.
Erickson says there will be no roundtable meeting in Litchfield in April as people are encouraged to attend the Civil War Symposium – an annual event – in Bloomington on April 25th. She says that same day, the Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War will have a ceremony at 3 p.m. at Lake Ripley Cemetery to honor the last Civil War veteran burial – an event that will be taking place in each county in the state.
Erickson says if anyone is doing research on Meeker County history or genealogy, they have been getting their record books and newspapers more accessible and most of the newspapers are now on microfilm. She says the museum at 308 North Marshall Avenue in Litchfield is open Tuesdays through Fridays from 10-to-4 and Saturdays from noon-to-4 and you can find more information at meekercomuseum.org or on their Facebook page.
The Minnesota State Patrol responded to an accident Thursday morning at 6:01 involving a semi and a pedestrian at Highway 55 and Commercial Drive in Annandale. The pedestrian, 45-year-old James Smith of Annandale received non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to the St. Cloud Hospital.
The 2026 Peterbilt Semi Truck, driven by 52-year-old Frank Melvin Warden of Maple Lake, was traveling westbound on Highway 55 and Smith was walking westbound on Highway 55, when contact was made. Also responding to the scene were the Wright County Sherriff’s Office, Annandale Fire Dept., Annandale Police Dept., and Allina Health EMS.
Pie Day is coming up at the Litchfield Opera House from 9-to-11 a.m. on March 14th. A variety of pies and crisps will be available for sale, and they may be pre-ordered by calling 320-221-6679.
Connie Lies says you can pre-order pies through March 10th and then pick them up at the Opera House on March 14th, preferably between 9 and 9:30 a.m. She says they will have more pies and crisps available for people who didn’t pre-order and will keep selling until 11 a.m. or until the pies and crisps are gone, and several varieties will be available.
Lies says the pies are $10 each, but since it’s the 250th anniversary of America this year, there’s a special on the apple pies – so if you buy one, you get the second one for just $5. She says the crisps are $7 each, and all of the pies and crisps have natural ingredients – no preservatives, and the crusts are homemade.
Lies says proceeds from the pie sale will go into the endowment fund at the Litchfield Opera House to help with major projects that may come up in the future such as new roofing. She says one of the current projects in the Opera House is installation of railings for the balcony.
