The Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic are hosting a Hot Dish on a Cold Day lunch buffet on Wednesday from 11-to-1 at Trinity Episcopal Church on 4th Street in downtown Litchfield. There will be beef and chicken stew, breads, dessert and beverages for $10.
It’s free for veterans and children 5 and under. Tickets will be sold at the door. Take-outs are available. Connie Lies says people should note that it’s at Trinity Episcopal Church this year which is handicapped accessible. She says all proceeds will go to veteran’s causes.
Lies says the Ladies of the G.A.R. help with decorating cemeteries for Memorial Day including Lake Ripley Cemetery locally, but also Fort Snelling in Minneapolis and national cemeteries such as Gettysburg. She says they not only get involved in Civil War-related projects, but they help all veterans.
Darlene Kotelnicki says the local Frank Daggett Circle has members from a large geographic area. She says the Ladies of the G.A.R. must be able to trace their ancestry to Civil War veterans.
Kotelnicki says the Ladies of the G.A.R. is the oldest women’s military organization in the nation as it was chartered in 1886.
The students and staff at St. Philip’s Catholic School in Litchfield wrapped up a busy week of activities at the end of January for Catholic Schools Week. Besides field trips, community service projects and other events, the school had a fundraiser at the Litchfield Eagles Club.
Principal Andrea Dietrich says the “Seeds of Faith” Songblast event helped raise funds for St. Philip’s School. She says there was an additional fundraiser during that event to raise money for their new math curriculum.
Dietrich says she would like to thank everyone who attended the event on January 31st and everyone who supports the school. She says Discovery Day will be held at the School of St. Philip in Litchfield on Thursday, February 26th from 9:30-to-10 a.m. and Tricia & The Toonies will be there. It’s open to all 3 and 4-year-olds.
Dietrich says Kindergarten Round-up is coming up in March at St. Philip’s School and there will also be an open house in March. She says they will be having a rummage sale again later in the school year, so start saving up items to donate. For more information about St. Philip’s Catholic School, call 320-693-6283.
The Litchfield School Board heard a presentation last night from Business Manager Jesse Johnson regarding the financial forecast and planning. Johnson talked about enrollment projections and expected revenues and expenses for the next five years.
Johnson says enrollment is expected to be flat. Average daily membership for K-through-12 right now in Litchfield is at 1,542 and is expected to be at 1,536 by the 2030-31 school year. He says by next year, expenses will outpace revenues. The Board approved of a motion directing the administration to begin looking at programs and services that could potentially be cut.
The Litchfield School Board also approved of the academic calendars last night for 2026-27 and 2027-28. Superintendent Susan Burris spoke about the continuing efforts to address concerns from the January 26th meeting that were brought up by members of the Hispanic community. She says she takes these concerns very seriously and will continue to work with the district staff on implementing a safe, secure and equitable learning environment for all students in the district.
Also last night, the Litchfield High School Student Council representatives Kelsey Palmer and Kalla Ziegler spoke about the successful blood drive which was held last Friday at the Litchfield Area Recreation Center as they collected 60-units of blood, surpassing their goal of 51-units. They also spoke about the activities taking place this week during Snow Week.
