In 1964, The Supremes became the first all-female group to score a No.1 hit in the UK with “Baby Love.” Across the Atlantic, the irresistible single also topped the charts, making The Supremes the first Motown act to have more than one No.1 US hit. They would continue to build on that record, eventually scoring more No.1 hits than any other Motown act, with a total of 12. “Baby Love” would later earn the group a Grammy nod for Best R&B Recording, and the Holland-Dozier-Holland-penned song eventually landed on Rolling Stones’ 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list.
In 1984, 36-year-old Tom Evans, a longtime member of Badfinger, who served as a guitarist, vocalist, bassist, and songwriter, took his own life. Evans co-wrote one of the band’s biggest hits, 1970’s Ivor Novello-winning power ballad, “Without You.” The song has since been covered by hundreds of artists, including Harry Nilsson and Mariah Carey.
In 2000, LeAnn Rimes scored her first No.1 hit in the UK with “Can’t Fight the Moonlight.” The song was written by Diane Warren for the Coyote Ugly soundtrack.
In 1988, American singer Robin Beck scored a No.1 UK hit with “First Time,” a power ballad that was originally recorded for a Coca-Cola commercial. In addition to spending three weeks at the top of the UK chart, the single also hit No.1 in multiple countries across Europe.
In 1965, for less than £5.00, music fans in London caught a legendary line-up of artists at Empire Pool’s “Glad Rag Ball.” On the bill were The Who, Wilson Pickett, The Kinks, The Hollies, and more.

The Litchfield City Council approved of a couple of equipment purchases on Monday evening. A Bobcat track skidloader will be purchased for $53,000 and a John Deere tractor – snow blower – rotary broom will be purchased for $30,000.
Mayor Ron Dingmann says the Council also received information about the possibility of the Veterans Administration building a community-based out-patient clinic in Litchfield. He says they would need to find enough land to build an 18,000 square foot building with 124 parking spaces, and the city administration is in contact with them about what land might be available.
Mayor Dingmann says the Council also heard a request Monday evening from two members of the youth baseball association – Brandon Nagel and Travis Eichner – who would like to see lights installed at the Cal Ripken fields. He says no action was taken, but the Council advised them to also meet with the School Board and the city administration for a plan forward.
Mayor Dingmann says the Litchfield City Council also had a work session yesterday morning to talk about the 2026 budget and staffing prior to the final budget and levy being approved in December.
The Meeker County Board of Commissioners listened to a presentation by members of the Dassel-Cokato FFA Ag Issues Forum Team. The five girls spoke about the loss of agricultural land.
The students will be making their presentation in a state competition in mid-December and need to make five public performances before that time and get feedback from their audiences. They used Wright County as an example as it has lost 16,000-acres to urban sprawl since 2017, and ag land is needed to produce food, but yet, landowners have a right to do what they want with their land and not be restricted by government regulations.
The Meeker County Board also listened to an annual report from Woodland Centers Director Dr. Ashley Kjos.
The Board approved of a request by Finance Director Heather Lemieux to use Ehlers as Meeker County’s investment advisor. The Commissioners also approved of a resolution presented by Public Works Director Phil Schmalz to apply for a local road improvement program for County-State-Aid-Highway 14. A resolution was also approved to support Darwin Township for a local road improvement program grant application. Schmalz says the Darwin Township project would be for improvements to 260th Street where Johnson Drive recently connected – behind Walmart – which has generated more traffic. He says the street is in tough shape.
The Litchfield City Council heard a request last night from a couple of Baseball Association members. Brandon Nagel and Travis Eichner would like to see lights installed for the Cal Ripkin Fields.
Nagel says new lights would be very expensive to purchase and install, but there are some used poles that will be sold in the near future by Steffes Auctioneers that would make the project more affordable. He says installing lights would make baseball more flexible for families and would create better opportunities for hosting tournaments.
The Council took no formal action on the matter, but encouraged the men to work with the city administration on the matter and to contact service clubs and the school board with their idea and to begin fundraising efforts as the city would likely share in half of the cost.
