The Songs of Summer Festival is coming up on August 14th at Memorial Park on Lake Ripley in Litchfield. Gates will open at 4 p.m. and the music starts at 5 p.m.
There will be 3 bands – beginning with Vintage Revival performing at 5 p.m., followed by South 40, and then this year’s headliner – Shirts and Skins. Cammy Moses says she’s seen the band perform and it will be a lot of fun.
Moses says they already have several food and beverage vendors lined up including the Knights of Columbus, Wrestling Club, LAMP/Kinship, Herradura’s and the American Legion. She says there are $20 raffle tickets available for sale at Mid Country Bank and the American Legion and the top prize will be $1,000.
Amanda Nelson says they accept freewill donations at the event to help cover expenses. She says they have lots of great sponsors who help cover some of the costs of the event.
Nelson says more sponsors are welcome, and the proceeds from the raffle tickets help to fund the grants that they award to various youth-related organizations in the community. She says people should mark their calendars for the Songs of Summer Festival on August 14th and remember to bring your lawn chairs.
The Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office received a report last night at 10:53 of a truck striking two cows on County Road 29 near the intersection of 13th Street NW in Lake Andrew Township. A 22-year-old man from rural Pennock who was driving the truck was pinned inside the vehicle after it went off the roadway, rolled in the ditch and struck a tree.
The man was able to call 911. The New London Fire Dept. and Kandiyohi County Rescue responded and extricated the man from the vehicle. He was treated at the scene and then transported by CentraCare with serious, but non-life threatening injuries. Also responding to the scene were Lakes Area First Responders and New London Ambulance.
The Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after what appear to be human remains were uncovered during excavation work near Lake Lillian. According to the sheriff’s office, an excavation employee contacted authorities at about 11:30 Wednesday morning after discovering several bones in the 9000 block of 123rd Avenue Southeast.
Deputies and detectives responded and determined the bones appeared to be human, although their origin was unknown at the time. With assistance from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, investigators excavated the immediate area and located additional remains believed to be from a single individual.
The Minnesota Indian Affairs Council was notified and later responded to the site. Preliminary findings indicate the remains may be archaeological in nature and of Indigenous origin. The remains have been transported to the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office for further examination and analysis.
The investigation remains open. Assisting the Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office are the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office, and the Minnesota Indian Affairs Council.
The Minnesota State Patrol responded to a motorcycle crash on Friday night at 9:04 on Minnesota Highway 4 at 325th Street in Swede Grove Township in Meeker County. A 2022 Suzuki motorcycle was southbound on Highway 4 when it left the roadway landing in the ditch.
A 25-year-old Litchfield man was driving. No further details are available at this time. Also responding to the scene were the Meeker County Sheriff’s Office, MN DNR, Grove City Fire Dept., Mayo ambulance, and North Memorial air care.
Dragon Dining will get started next Monday – June 8th. The program provides free summer meals for kids 18 and under at the Litchfield High School Cafeteria.
Meals will be served Monday through Friday from June 8th through July 31st from 11:30-to-12:30, and no meals will be served June 19th, and July 6th through the 10th. No registration is required.
It’s dine-in only – the meals must be consumed on-site. Children ages 1-to-9 must be accompanied by someone 12 or older. There are no seconds, and adult meals are $5.75. If you have any questions, call 320-693-2444.
Fire damaged a coffee shop and some other businesses in Downtown New London on Thursday night. The New London Fire Department says at 9:48 p.m. Thursday, they were dispatched to the Waysetter Coffee Shop, formerly Lake Effect Coffee, at 32 North Main Street. A passerby spotted smoke and flames and called 911, and firefighters also saw flames when they arrived about 4 minutes later. They entered the building a quickly extinguished the blaze. With the help of The Spicer Fire Department, they checked out to make sure the fire hadn’t spread, but there were no signs of fire or damage to the roof or ceiling.
The business had recently been undergoing renovations, and it is believed the fire started by spontaneous combustion of stain-soaked rags in a garbage bag. Damage to the coffee shop and adjacent businesses was estimated at around $30,000, with fire damage to the front entrance area of the coffee shop, and smoke damage elsewhere. Fire crews were on the scene for about an hour, and they got help from New London Ambulance and the Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office. No one was injured.
