In 1963, tragedy struck when 30-year-old country star Patsy Cline was killed in a plane crash, alongside Cowboy Copas and Hawkshaw Hawkins. The Tennessee native, born Virginia Patterson Hensley, was traveling home from Kansas City, following a benefit concert for the widow of DJ “Cactus” Jack Call. At the time of her death, Cline was just beginning to enjoy crossover success on the US pop charts, with hits like “I Fall To Pieces” and “Crazy.” In the years and decades that followed, Cline’s influence only grew. In addition to breaking multiple glass ceilings as a woman in country music, Cline was also revered for her emotive vocals and bold persona. In 1973, she became the first woman to be inducted into the Country Hall of Fame.
In 2017, Ed Sheeran topped the UK albums chart with his third album ÷ (aka “Divide”). Shooting to No.1 within three days of its release, ÷ became the fastest-selling album by a male artist in UK pop history. Nine of its 16 songs entered the UK Top 10, breaking a record previously held by Calvin Harris. Controversially, the other seven tracks made the Top 20, which led to an overhaul of how the charts were compiled. Beginning on July 7, 2017, the number of tracks an artist could have in the chart at any one time was limited to three.
In 1956, Frank Sinatra released his tenth studio LP Songs For Swingin’ Lovers!, which was his first to top the UK albums chart. In 2000, it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
In 1983, Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” began a seven-week run at the top of the Billboard Hot 100. The second single plucked from his record-breaking sixth studio album, Thriller, “Billie Jean” topped the charts in ten countries around the world and to date has sold an estimated 14 million copies.
In 1963, The Beatles recorded their third single “From Me To You,” originally written by Lennon and McCartney as a B-side. It topped the UK charts but sold poorly when it was first released in America, selling less than 4,000 copies. Later, US interest in the band eventually helped to push the song to No. 41 on Billboard’s Hot 100.
In 2002, The Osbournes made its debut on MTV. A fly-on-the-wall look at the life of ex-Black Sabbath singer Ozzy Osbourne and his family, the show was an instant hit and became the channel’s most-viewed program. It ran for four seasons until 2005.

Pie Day is coming up at the Litchfield Opera House from 9-to-11 a.m. on March 14th. A variety of pies and crisps will be available for sale, and they may be pre-ordered by calling 320-221-6679.
Connie Lies says you can pre-order pies through March 10th and then pick them up at the Opera House on March 14th, preferably between 9 and 9:30 a.m. She says they will have more pies and crisps available for people who didn’t pre-order and will keep selling until 11 a.m. or until the pies and crisps are gone, and several varieties will be available.
Lies says the pies are $10 each, but since it’s the 250th anniversary of America this year, there’s a special on the apple pies – so if you buy one, you get the second one for just $5. She says the crisps are $7 each, and all of the pies and crisps have natural ingredients – no preservatives, and the crusts are homemade.
Lies says proceeds from the pie sale will go into the endowment fund at the Litchfield Opera House to help with major projects that may come up in the future such as new roofing. She says one of the current projects in the Opera House is installation of railings for the balcony.
The 28th Annual Tim Orth Memorial Foundation basketball jamboree will be held at the Glencoe/Silver Lake High School Gymnasium in Glencoe on Saturday, March 28th. The doors will open at 3:30 p.m. with the games beginning at 5:15 p.m. Admission is a freewill donation.
Also on Saturday, March 28th, there will be a 3-on-3 Basketball Pick up Tournament from 9 a.m.-to-1:30 p.m. Students in grades 5-through-8 will be in one tournament and 9th graders-to– adult will be in another. On Wednesday morning at 7:35, the Stearns County Emergency Communications Center received a report of a crash at the intersection of County Roads 42 and 161 in Farming Township, about 4.5 miles north of Richmond. The caller reported that a flatbed-style propane truck was in the ditch and resting on a power box, with the driver still inside the vehicle.
Upon arrival, an officer from the Cold Spring/Richmond Police Department located a Wenners Gas Company propane truck leaking propane. The driver was trapped inside the vehicle and sustained injuries in the crash. The vehicle involved was a 2016 Freightliner straight-axle truck equipped with a propane tank.
The Chain of Lakes Fire and Rescue Department extricated the driver from the truck. Paynesville Ambulance transported the driver to the St. Cloud Hospital. The preliminary investigation indicates the truck was traveling northbound on County Road 161 approaching County Road 42. Due to heavy fog in the area, it appears the T-intersection came up more quickly than anticipated. The driver attempted to make a left turn to travel westbound on County Road 42, causing the truck to roll onto its side and slid into the ditch, striking a power box and several trees.
Stearns Electric was contacted and shut off power to the affected area due to the propane leak and the truck resting on the power box. Because of the amount of propane being transported, roadways in the area were closed for an extended period to allow the propane to safely dissipate.
Assisting the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office were the Cold Spring/Richmond Police Department, Minnesota State Patrol, Chain of Lakes Fire and Rescue Department, Paynesville Ambulance, and Stearns Electric.
