Memorial Day Picnic

The annual Memorial Day picnic – hosted by the Meeker County Historical Society – will be at the Litchfield Opera House on Monday from 11-to-1:30. It’s a big fundraiser each year for the G.A.R. Hall and Meeker County Museum.
Museum Executive Director Danelle Erickson says your ticket for lunch on Monday also includes admission to the museum which will be open Memorial Day from 11-to-2. She says they have the picnic at the Opera House because it has more space and the lunch will include BBQs, hot dogs, potato salad, pie and ice cream. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children.
Erickson says Memorial Day actually began shortly after the Civil War – in 1868 – as the graves of the war veterans were decorated with flowers. She says the Ladies of the G.A.R. decorate the graves at Lake Ripley Cemetery, and Historical Society Board members will be placing flags on the graves of the Civil War veterans.
Erickson says they’re hoping for a good crowd for Monday’s picnic at the Litchfield Opera House, and any additional donations for the museum would be greatly appreciated. She encourages everyone to remember what Memorial Day is all about.
