National 4H Week is being observed this week. The special week from October 5th through the 11th gives local club members a chance to talk to other kids about joining 4H and to put up displays around the community promoting the 4H program.
Meeker County 4H Extention Educator Cassidy Martin says there are 8 clubs in Meeker County with about 370 kids involved and there are also some independent members. She says the kids can study any number of project areas and it’s kind of a self-directed, choose your own adventure program.
Martin says 4H is for kids from Kindergarten to one year past high school and the clubs meet once a month. She says there are different project bowl competitions that the members can compete in throughout the year, along with day camps, workshops and overnight camps.
For more information about joining 4H, call the Meeker County Extension office at 693-5275. You can also go to the University of Minnesota Meeker County 4H website or social media for more information.
Highway 22 will be detoured from Litchfield to Eden Valley starting today. According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation, through traffic will be routed to Highway 24, Meeker County Road 34, and Highway 55 so that crews can replace a culvert just north of 355th Street.
That location is about a half mile north of the Crow River. The project is expected to be completed by October 17th, depending on weather and other unforeseeable circumstances.
The 20th annual St. John Lutheran Church Oktober Feast will be held in the Atwater Community Center this Sunday from 4:30-to-7:30 p.m. There will be all kinds of German foods and old-time German music performed by the Wendinger Band of New Ulm.
Ardy Johnson says there will be pork hocks, meat balls, brats, sauerkraut, hot potato salad, spätzle (noodles), red cabbage, liverwurst, blood sausage, head cheese, hard crust rolls and lots of desserts. She says she grew up eating German foods, north of Atwater, and she specializes in the hot potato salad.
Johnson says the cost of the meal is $20 per person, $6 for children 5-to-12 and free for children under 5, and you’re welcome to go back for seconds. She says proceeds this year will go to the Grove City Area CARE meals-on-wheels, Atwater Area Help for Seniors, and St. John Lutheran youth programs. Johnson says they usually serve over 300 people each year during the German dinner in the Atwater Community Center.
