On this day in music, April 14, 2017, “Sign Of The Times,” the debut single by ex-One Direction singer Harry Styles, went to No.1 in the UK. To get there, it knocked Ed Sheeran’s “Shape Of You” off the top of the charts after a 13-week run. “Sign Of The Times” debuted at No.4 on Billboard’s Hot 100, reaching No.1 the following week. It also reached the top spot in the US iTunes charts just 19 minutes after its release, breaking the previous record held by Adele, whose 2015 song “Hello” took the No.1 position after 50 minutes.
In 1978, Art Garfunkel scored a No.1 hit in the UK with “Bright Eyes,” the theme song from Watership Down, an animated movie based on Richard Adams’ book about rabbits. Written by Mike Batt, the mastermind behind The Wombles, the song spent six weeks at the top and was the best-selling UK single of 1979. It was Garfunkel’s second UK No.1 but didn’t chart in the US.
In 1953, Liverpool-born Lita Roza became the first British female singer to top the UK singles chart when her cover of Patti Page’s novelty song, “(How Much) Is That Doggie In Window?,” reached No.1. Roza, who purportedly hated the tune, never performed it live.
In 1970, Creedence Clearwater Revival made their live UK debut in style – with a two-night engagement at London’s Royal Albert Hall.
In 1980, Gary Numan released The Touring Principle ‘79, the UK’s first commercially available feature-length rock video on VHS cassette. It was recorded at London’s Hammersmith Odeon venue as part of Numan’s The Pleasure Principle tour and topped the UK video charts.

The School of St. Philip will be adding a pre-school this fall. Open houses will be held in the future and specific dates will be posted on social media.
Principal Andrea Dietrich says anyone interested may call the school to schedule a time to look at the preschool room and to get more information. She says the preschool will be for children ages 3-to-5 who are potty-trained, and they continue to take registrations for children in grades K through 5 any time.
Dietrich says the annual St. Philip’s School Rummage Sale is coming up at the Church of St. Philip on April 24th from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on April 25th from 8-to-2, and they will be accepting donations of items at the church from April 18th through the 22nd. She says 4th and 5th graders from St. Philip’s School, along with herself and some other chaperones, are enjoying activities this week at Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center.
Dietrich says if anyone would like more information about St. Philip’s Catholic School in Litchfield, they may call 693-6283.
The Litchfield School Board approved of the 2025-26 revised budget last night. Revenues and expenses have both increase since the original budget was approved.
Business Manager Jesse Johnson spoke to the Board last night about the changes. In the revised budget, revenues are now at $30,035,820, up $184,830 from the original budget of $29,850,990. Some of the changes include an increase in interest earnings, increases to Title I and II, higher state and federal reimbursement rates than originally projected, and higher participation in youth summer recreation and Dragons Kids Club.
The expenses are also increasing with the new amount of $30,886,552 – up $524,134 from the original projection of $30,362,418. The increase in the expenses are due to contract settlements, increase in health insurance contributions, costs of the community survey and pool improvement project and more. The Board also approved of upcoming work sessions – on May 11th with ICS at 4:30 p.m. and on June 8th at 4 p.m. for a safety & security discussion with Jennifer Ridgeway.

She says the goal was 48-units and they actually collected 57. And Adam Stern presented VIP access admission tickets to all of the Litchfield School Board members to the “Night at the Oscars” Litchfield High School prom event on April 25th.
