- 1877: Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce surrenders to the U.S. Army.
After leading his people on a fighting retreat of more than 1,000 miles toward Canada, he gave up in the Bear Paw Mountains of Montana, about 40 miles short of the border. His surrender speech is remembered for the line that he would fight no more forever. - 1962: The Beatles release their first single, “Love Me Do.”
The record came out in Britain with “P.S. I Love You” on the flip side and reached the Top 20 there. It was the first release by the lineup of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. - 2011: Apple co-founder Steve Jobs dies at 56.
He had stepped down as chief executive six weeks earlier after years of illness. Under his leadership Apple introduced the Macintosh, the iPod, the iPhone, and the iPad.
