Litchfield Superintendent of Schools Susan Burris had to make her first weather-related decision of the season on Tuesday as the weather forecast looked threatening. A decision was made to cancel Tuesday evening activities.
Burris says students may have been able to get to activities safely, but by the time the events would have ended, the roads were very slick. She says there was no school on Wednesday for students as it was a staff development day.
Burris says students will be in school until noon on December 23rd before the holiday break begins and staff will have another development time that afternoon. She says the Litchfield School Board is going to have a workshop on December 8th at 4:45 – prior to the regular meeting and truth-in-taxation hearing – to proactively talk about possible future capital improvement projects.
Burris says ICS officials will have information for school board members and if the board would decide to go to voters next November with a bond question, they will have plenty of time to get everything organized. She says the Board will decide on December 8th whether it will be necessary to have a second December meeting – on the 22nd.
Burris says they had visitors at the November 24th School Board meeting from the Cross-Country and Girls Tennis Teams, and members of the football team will visit the Board on December 8th to talk about their successful season. She says the pool renovation project is underway at the high school and should be completed by early January.
Meeker County Sheriff Brian Cruze has decided that the 1 p.m. monthly test of the Meeker County outdoor warning sirens will be canceled for all sirens in Meeker County during the winter months. The sirens will not be sounded on December 3rd, January 7th or February 4th to avoid unnecessary strain and damage to the Outdoor Warning System.
Monthly siren tests will resume on March 4th of 2026. Sheriff Cruze says winter tends to bring extreme weather conditions including extreme cold, freezing rain/drizzle, ice, and snow. He says testing sirens during these weather conditions puts the Outdoor Warning System at risk for unnecessary strain and damage to siren equipment and internal operating systems.
The Meeker County Sheriff’s Office will continue to utilize the mass notification system to notify the community of important safety alerts and time-sensitive messages and will activate sirens as determined necessary in emergency weather events.
If you have not registered for mass notifications, visit the Sheriff’s Office website at www.co.meeker.mn.us/217/Sheriff to register for this free service. Contact Stephanie Johnson at Meeker County Emergency Management at 320-693-5420 if you have questions or if you need assistance with creating an account.
